Running cursor doesn't show

wug-on-praat opened this issue · comments

Hello,
I am running praat (6.2.09) on Ubuntu Jammy. The running cursor while playing audio doesn't show. Any suggestions why this might be? I checked all settings for the audio playing preferences.

Thank you!

This is due to the circumstance that Ubuntu has moved from PulseAudio to PipeWire, with less-than-optimal PulseAudio emulation. We have three options:

  1. Wait until the authors of PipeWire correct the bug. This may sound like a far-fetched option, but half a year ago Praat’s audio output would play for no more than 1 second, and this problem has evaporated with a PipeWire update in October or so.
  2. If option 1 does not work within half a year or so, we may have to convert from PulseAudio to PipeWire. This will be painful, but may be necessary.
  3. Try to work around the problem by trying different routes within PulseAudio. It is possible that PulseAudio emulation will work correctly if we use a different subset of PulseAudio, or a different order of calls that the authors of PipeWire did test.
