Reverse proxy via nginx error

I can successfully make the agent to work if running it as a docker container to expose a port and directly access it from Portainer on another server but if I expose the agent through nginx reverse proxy on the agent server, it breaks with this error log on the Portainer.

http: proxy error: invalid character '\x1f' looking for beginning of value

I can still successfully add the endpoint and also query the Host Details and Event list pages with right information but cannot see any containers, images and other listings saying Unable to retrieve containers on the web page.

Portainer is running on CentOS 8 as version 1.24.1 and the Portainer agent is running on Ubuntu 18.04 as version 2.0.0.
