Show plain text file

I am working on a new website. There is no default.html in the root so directories are shown which is what I want. In each directory at the end of the trail is a text file. I would like this to load automatically and displayed as a text file.

If I put it in an HTML file, the text gets munged. I can put it with the file name and a .txt extension but it is then a download.

There will only be one text file per directory. I want the contents of the plain text file to be shown once the directory is navigated to.
