Diabetic-Retinopathy-Detection-Using-CNN

Diabetes is a disease caused by an increase of the glucose level in the blood. According to WHO (world health organization) more than 170 million people worldwide are affected by DR and the number is estimated to increase by 366 million by 2030. This disease has various adverse consequences on almost all organs of the patient. The retina of the eye is the most rapidly and likely affected by the diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that occurs due to diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading causeof new cases of blindness in adults, as well as the most common cause of vision loss for people with diabetes. It can arise as a result of the high blood sugar levelsthat diabetes causes. Over time, having too much sugar in the blood can damage blood vessels throughout the body, including in the retina. The retina is the membrane covering the back of the eye. It detects light and sends signals to the brain through the optic nerve. If sugar blocks the tiny blood vessels that go into the retina, it can cause them to leak or bleed. The eye may then grow new blood vessels that are weaker and leak or bleed more easily. If the eye starts to grow new blood vessels, this is known as proliferative diabetic retinopathy, which experts consider a more advanced stage. Diabetic retinopathy can be classified as non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Depending on the presence of features on the retina, the stages of DR can be identified. In the NPDR stage, the disease can advance from mild, moderate to severe stage with various levels of features except less growth of new blood vessels. PDR is the advanced stage where the fluids sent by the retina for nourishment trigger the growth of new blood vessels. They grow along the retina and over the surface of the clear, vitreous gel that fills the inside of the eye. If they leak blood, severe vision loss and even blindness can result.
