You can attack buttons with E-bolt or Lightning.

This happens in Vanilla.
I know why this happens. The button (and any other switch that makes less sense, including levers and chains) is a targetable entity so that spells such as Missiles of Magic and Harpoon, and projectile spells like Slow or Confuse, can hone in on the button to activate it. However, that means Lightning, Lightning Staffs, Energy Bolt and the Staff of Oblivion can also target the button.
As far as I've tested, as long as your mouse isn't hovering directly over or VERY nearby the button while casting either of those spells, or using either of those staffs, the game will not attempt to target the button.
