[SH01] Document the intended real-hardware response to invalid SysEx Reverb Macros

nmlgc opened this issue · comments

34 out of the 39 MIDIs across both of Shuusou Gyoku's soundtrack send invalid Reverb Macro SysEx messages:

  1. Both versions of the Stage 3 boss theme (天空アーミー) send Reverb Macro #11 (F0 41 10 42 12 40 01 30 0B 04 F7)
  2. The other 32 MIDIs send Reverb Macro #20 (F0 41 10 42 12 40 01 30 14 7B F7)

Sound Canvas VA ignores such invalid Reverb Macro messages, whereas real hardware does something that sets up some kind of panning delay, as observed in the Romantique Tp recordings and documented in the upcoming ReC98 blog post. Currently, this is the one element in the Romantique Tp BGM packs that is not present in the Sound Canvas VA packs, but it's likely that we can get the same panning delay out of Sound Canvas VA if we just send one or more SysEx messages that define the reverb you'd get on real hardware.

If we get help from a real-hardware owner who documents the intended response, I'll create new versions of the Sound Canvas VA packs for free. Otherwise, my backers over at ReC98 can always pay for me to buy a SC-88Pro and do it all myself, I guess…
