low resolution merge file

When trying to merge various PDF files, it works very well after I have modified the Imagmagik work around, however it takes all the text based PDF files and merges them as low-resolution PDF image files.
If I take the original PDF file and I split these, it maintains the resolution and all the text is still editable, however when I merge these it changes it to a low resolution JPG based PDF.
Is there a config setting I am missing somewhere?
