Sign text is a bit small to read without being close up

First up we have a screenshot off my phone. I'm standing about 1.5 nodes away and the text is legible but small enough that it takes time to read.

Second is a comparison of the new font to the old one (pre-Unicode I think, as used on Linuxforks) (new on top, old on bottom)

I would definitely rate the legibility of the bottom sign higher. The new font is slightly smaller. Can we amend this easily by, say, rasterizing the new font at a slightly bigger resolution?

Legibility can be a big problem for Minetest at sub-1080 resolutions and I would like to think better legibility would help by making more users actually read signs (especially ones that contain important information like the rules) or quickly recognise sign text in their bases.

isn't there a button for a "wide font" 🤔 or is that too wide?

The wide font is much, much bigger. Something just a bit bigger but not huge would be nice.

or let me put it this way: there used to be a 15px and 31px size, and now they're called 16px and 32px, but somehow the 16px is smaller than the 15px? Hmm, how about a 24px size?

Not sure but I think character spacing has doubled and because of that also scaled down vertically a bit.
Old fonts probably only had margin either left or right side but new fonts have both left and right margin.

An astute observation, and I think the kerning looks worse for it.
