Custom Assets

I would really love to be able to customize the names of individual faction assets so that I can see harvester below an editable name field. I already do that with my hand crafted notes because it feels more flavorful to think of a harvester as "Robinson Construction Company" or whatever. There are also times that I want to add some new group to the sector, but I don't want to keep track of a 7th or 8th faction just for them. I might have a liberation army with a bunch of militia units, but then some pirates wind up joining them so I have a few "Thora Irregulars" and then one "Tornado Pirate Gang." I think of it like a micro faction, but it doesn't really deviate from the rules, mechanically speaking.

Sorry if this got long winded, but I have no idea if the site is being updated any more. I saw recent updates here, which gave me hope. I'd be willing to contribute if necessary, but it's understandable if that can't happen. I love Sectors Without Number. I think it's the best RPG tool I've seen in over a decade of gaming. The only two issues I've ever had with it are the lack of asset customization and the fact that it's a bit cumbersome to move faction assets around. Anyway, thank you.

@Khazagt this is great background for this ticket! Much appreciated and totally understand where you are coming from with the need to add custom names to factions.

Yeah, I haven't been actively developing anymore. BUT, with that being said, I'm supporting and accepting any pull requests that may come through.

How do you see the moving of faction assets to be made easier?

My first instinct when I was experimenting with faction turns was to move assets from the sector tab. While I think it is important to be able to edit from the elements tab, I also think there are advantages to editing faction assets while the map is visible. I put a lot of thought into the relative positions of different factions (astrography I guess?). I also have a problem with forgetting the exact name of the entity I'm moving to and then having to consult the map again. It can be easy to accidentally put an army on 'Alcipel' instead of 'Arcapai.' The menu in elements is also not sorted alphabetically, so I usually have to scroll up and down a few times to get my target.

All that being said, it's usually not a problem when I take my time. I only get frustrated when I want to crank out one or two faction turns during a game when I have a short deadline and a narrow margin of error.

As someone with little exposure to the backend of the program, I would suggest an arrow icon or 'Transfer' text next to each asset on the sector map entity menu. Clicking this arrow or text button would present the same entity type and name dropdown menus from the elements tab.

Since players cannot see faction presence or assets, this transfer button could be visible outside of edit mode to distinguish a difference between editing your solar system vs moving some trucks around. If players were to be given the ability to see faction assets, then this transfer feature would fit better in the edit menu. Of course, faction information does not seem to appear in the edit menu currently.

Nice, I will consider contributing if I happen to come up with a solid solution to something around here.

Great thoughts! I've opened another ticket for asset transfers (#264).

Thanks for this @Khazagt!
