Uncertain copy: "Paste an HTML5 link"

cemckinley opened this issue · comments

Hi there, I'm not sure of what is meant by an "HTML5 link" in the placeholder text field copy "Paste an HTML5, YouTube, Vimeo, or SoundCloud link here" for adding media to a project. Does this mean a video file source from a video tag? Or the whole tag itself? It seems like there could be a more clear wording.

Hi Cara,

When we say "HTML5 link" we do literally mean the the files source. For example, http://media.w3.org/2010/05/sintel/trailer.mp4 would be something we would expect from the user.

If you have any suggestions for what we could put there instead then please do lend us your thoughts!

I guess it seems like just providing a link to a source file isn't necessarily "HTML5" - it's just a video file on a server. I gather that the video file needs to be compatible with an HTML5 video tag, but for someone who is unfamiliar with exactly what that means, I think it would be harder to infer. Perhaps something like "Paste a video file (.mp4, .ogg, .webm), YouTube, Vimeo, or SoundCloud link here"?

That's not bad although we technically would have to expand that to include audio types too. I'll let other people weigh in here but so far that seems like probably the best approach.

Yeah it could get a little wordy :) I also hadn't realized that HTML5 meant audio files too. Indeed maybe a wordsmith out there has some good ideas!

Could file be confused with local files?

Saying link, I think, is more clear in that aspect.

For what it is worth, very soon that line is getting a small update here:
4894333#diff-3a2c4335e7c950b7a667b59c970a7f5eR145

I kinda like HTML5 media link.

Also, somehow that "an" slipped back in there again, sigh, that line seems
to have a typo curse on me.
