How do you keep the same terminal?

Start Project
Open Terminal
Do Stuff
Hit F5 - build run
Environment changes... existing terminal... disappears?
Open New terminal in "debugging" layout
Do Stuff
Stop debugging
You're now back to "first" Terminal.
This means you have two terminals open? Is there a way to only have one that persists?
