[Color Picker] Not working when run as administrator

PrzemyslawTusinski opened this issue · comments

ℹ Computer information

  • PowerToys version: master and current stable (0.20.0)
  • PowerToy module: ColorPicker

📝 Provide detailed reproduction steps (if any)

  • Run PowerToys as administrator
  • Use color picker hotkey

✔️ Expected result

Colorpicking starts

❌ Actual result

Nothing happens

I also have a problem - Color picker still works after being turned off in the settings.

@ivan100sic I see this as opposite issues? @PrzemyslawTusinski opened bug about color picker not starting, but you report that it still works - do you refer to running PT as admin as well?
Does it open for you - you just cannot close it?

Sorry for the confusion, for me, that happens when running PT as non-admin.

Me too!

Is this still a problem using the new Color Picker?

I just tried this and it works. PT as admin, Color picker ran elevated

We can close it.

@ghost, @crutkas & @enricogior: I'm still experiencing this issue when the PowerToys application is started on Windows start-up and in elevated mode the color picker still doesn't work, but it works after I restart the PowerToys application. I'm using PowerToys v0.29.3 on Windows 10 Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042.

@stiltet
after a restart, can you check in TaskManager -> Details tab is ColorPickerUI.exe is running?

@enricogior: I've just checked and no, it's not running even though "PowerToys.exe" is running.

@stiltet
I cannot reproduce it with 0.31.2. Please open a new issue.

I have the same problem as @stiltet , with PowerToys v0.33.1 on Windows startup and running as admin, the color picker doesn't work. ColorPickerUI.exe is not in the task manager.

If I close and reopen PowerToys, then color picker works again.

@tomtastico
we currently have #8831 open to track this problem, feel free to comment there.

@enricogior I'm not sure it's exactly the same, as it does work when restarting PowerToys, even as admin. It's only when auto starting with Windows that it doesn't work. So I'm not sure it's related to the hotkey capturing, but rather the instantiation of ColorPickerUI.exe with Windows launch?

@tomtastico
OK, do you mind opening a new issue for your scenario? Thanks.
