border/margin for desktop icons

Hello Michel,
do you think there is a way to add some border or margin to the desktop area to avoid having the desktop icons behind the dock?

I'm afraid it's not possible at least from within a Gnome Shell extension.
Ubuntu developers wrote a Nautilus patch for a similar issue with the Unity launcher [1,2]
but then dropped it [3].
