Just found this sweet little script by a tweet from Smashing Magazine, and the demo doesn't work on Chrome (atleast not for me).

Works fine with Chrome 14.0.835.202.

Hi peppelorum. What version of Chrome, and which OS are you using? I'll see if I can replicate it.
Please try the demo - remember you should be looking at the favicon in the browser tab after changing the label (sorry if this seems obvious, but someone on a forum wasn't sure where they were supposed to be looking!)

@johnschult: Safari doesn't support favicon changes client-side, and will therefore not support Notificon at this time.

I'm using Chrome 15.0.8xxxx on MacOSX Lion, tried the demo, works fine in Firefox but not Chrome.

Aha! When I looked into the console I got a nice little 404,

This appears to be working as of latest chrome version (15.0.874.102). I could not replicate the behavior in an earlier version, but I am using snow leopard. Let me know if it is working for you.

Sorry but this is still not workinig for me, and I'm using almost the same version .106 in the end.

When pressing return, do you see a small favicon displayed?

Can you try the example page while in private browsing mode and let me know if it works then?

It appears so, very odd indeed.

But pasting and running the "data:image..." seems to work in both.

If it works in incognito mode, it is likely down to an extension you have installed. Try disabling your plugins one-by-one to isolate which one is causing the problem. It appears to work fine in stock chrome on lion.
