Curly quotes (‘’, “”) are replaced by corner brackets (『』, 「」)

Being a typography nerd, I use these curly quotes a lot. When I send them to identi.ca or twitter, hotot replaces them with corner brackets, which is very painful — especially for the curly apostrophe.
This happens with hotot v.0.9.8.10 (= the version proposed by the hotot-team PPA), it did not happen with v.0.9.7.32 (= the version that came with Ubuntu 12.04). Is that a recent feature? Is there a way to disable it?
