Karabiner settings do not work on new laptop

Ran mackup restore on a new macbook, Karabiner-elements looked like it had the right settings but none of the key modifications would work. Removed the symlink my mackup backup directory and re-installed Karabiner, and things are working now.
Just a heads up for anyone else who might be experiencing something similar -- it looks like at least some of the configuration being backed up by mackup breaks Karabiner.
Both macs run mac os Ventura 13.2.1.
