The benchmark doesn't compile (prepare.sh)

The benchmark doesn't compile. I can compile and run the previous version (NeuroIPS 2019) but the new version has something missing such that prepare.sh stops:

Interesting, it looks like the dynamic linking library isn't getting loaded.

What distro are you running on / compiler version are you using?

Can you add set(CMAKE_VERBOSE_MAKEFILE on) to the top of CMakeLists.txt so we can see what command is being run to link the benchmark?

Here's the final command that links it for me:

The -ldl should bring in the required symbol (dlsym).

Mine is Ubuntu 18.04, with g++ 9.2

I had no issues running the sysml/NeuroIPS version, so whatever that is causing the error is for the new release 🤔

Confirmed the issue with a docker container. It's related to the linking order we give in the CMakeLists.txt file. Working on a fix.

Looks like it was a combination of two things -- first, the linker order, which was wrong. It is actually pretty surprising it was working on other platforms... Second, FST seems to require g++ > 10 for properly resolving some static const class fields. Both should be fixed in the above commit.

For reference, here's the set of commands I ran in a fresh 18.04 container to get a compile to work:

apt-get -y update
apt install -y software-properties-common
add-apt-repository -y ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test
apt install -y git cmake g++-9 cargo libboost-all-dev
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-9 10

Hopefully this works for you, or at least changes the error message. :)

I just pulled the recent commit by @RyanMarcus , i.e. ef28d7d

I still wonder what's the aftermath of disabling FST on the g++ < 10

FST is a competitor, the only impact of disabling FST is that results for FST won't appear in your output. None of the other data structures will be affected by disabling FST.

Of course, there are many changes between GCC7 and GCC10. These improvements might not uniformly affect every index, so using the most recent stable version of GCC is always a good idea.
