Preserve tags after switching back from external screen

For someone that uses every once in a while more than a single screen, to ensure that tag numbers are left as they were before switching back to a single default screen, how about adding (a reference to)

awesomeWM/awesome#1382 (comment)

to the template rc.lua?

Since it's your use case, why don't you post a diff patch, containing the information exactly as you want?

Or you just want a simple link?

The comment awesomeWM/awesome#1382 (comment)) argues against adding this code to the standard rc.lua, because it fixes a symptom, but not the problem itself which would require an additional layer of abstraction in Awesome.

But in the meanwhile, why not fix the symptoms? It simply does not seem to cause much harm. But ...
