New files aren't actually focused

Describe the bug
When you create a new file using the menu, the editor appears to be focused (the caret is blinking), but you can't type without clicking on it. Keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl-W also don't work.
Additional information
It works fine if you press Ctrl-N instead of using the menu.
