Additional context
if runner: 'jest-runner-tsc' is added the test runnings but it doesn't execute any of the tests (should of ran 4) and doesn't failing on any broken tests

ts-node is not related to ts-jest. If you are using ts-node for Jest project, it's only to help Jest to process Jest ts config file.
Looking at your stack trace, it's not related to internal ts-jest so I'd recommend to ask this question in Jest Discord or report in Jest repo.
Besides, when using projects in Jest config, preset or transform option won't be affected. In your jest.unit.config.js you need to declare transform option so that Jest knows how to process ts file.
