I followed all the steps to enable DriveDX access to my approved external drive, and got nowhere (i.e., back to the beginning). SMART status: Not supported.

Meanwhile, OS Monterey accepted my external drive and all the problems with it that had been heralded by the final updated Big Sur had suddenly disappeared. The external drive has no problems and everything is back to normal. What happened? Beats me. But, I'll happily accept the outcome.
