Update 2017.2.12.0 totally breaks sidewise

Sidewise stopped working after the last update. Nothing happens when clicking the lightbulb and the settings panel displays as empty collapsed. This is on Chrome 49.0.2623.112, the last version that will run on OS X 10.8. I verified my settings are not at issue/corrupt by reproducing the disfunction on a fresh Chrome user account.
Same here, except, that I use Version 39.0.2171.95 m. It was working like a charm before, but after the update, neither settings panel, nor sidebar loads. At the moment its not really an option to update this chrome, because other apps need it like this, but if you confirm me, that around version 50.x its working, maybe i can pull that together.
update: i could install Version 50.0.2661.102 m on top, but issue is still the same as above,.. ( that is the highest i can install for now)
I have this issue as well in Chrome 53.0.2785.89 (64-bit) on Xubuntu Linux. The button does nothing when clicked.
