QuickForm Error: nonexistent html element Element 'groupmode' does not exist in HTML_QuickForm::removeElement()

I'm interested in the annotation module, and have just installed this onto Moodle 3.6.10 (sorry, my dev server is behind the times, but I think should work with the version.php supplied in the plugin).
I've tried to add in an activity, but I get the error
QuickForm Error: nonexistent html element Element 'groupmode' does not exist in HTML_QuickForm::removeElement()
before I can actually do anything. Any suggestions?
