Replacing carrot drop-downs in left navigation pane with checkboxes

Request to replace carrot drop-downs with checkboxes (to visually cue that user is progressively filtering items, as is displayed in upper central pane).

Current problem: User is just as likely to click on the underlined text to open the drop-down as the carrot; clicking the carrot does not select it as a filter, but clicking the underlined word does, and if user is deep in the markdowns and the upper central part of the screen is not visible, they will not realize they are filtering.

Current problem: markdown structure means the left pane becomes visually busy with vertical lines instead of content; some of the vocabularies have markdowns and some not- this is causing vocabularies at same level to be offset (not left aligned) based on presence or absence of carrot- this makes it difficult to immediately discern vocabulary options at a single level.
