(setq org-startup-with-inline-images t) breaks org-superstar (when opening a new document)

Doom emacs. If you add (setq org-startup-with-inline-images t) to (after! org ... ) block org-superstar-mode stops working.
Any hints what may be causing this would be really appreciated. It took a veeeery long time to figure this out and would be really keen on solving it.
I've noticed it only after switching from X11 to Wayland though, so now there is that as well.
