Problem after installing dropbear patch

I had a working situation with firmware 3FE46398BGCB22.bin.
Then I tried to patch this firmware with the dropbear update, on a Ubuntu machine.
The image was build successful, without errors.
After flashing the new patched image, I can't get a valid fiber link.
The link is there for a few seconds, and then dies. At that moment the SFP is completely dead and can't be reached over SSH.
Flashing back the original 3FE46398BGCB22.bin does not help. The issue persists.
Only thing that helps is flashing back to an older firmware, then everything works fine again.
Any clue what could go wrong here?
Patching dropbear with firmware 3FE47111BFHB32.bin seems to work fine, so I'll stick to this version.
