I have to hold down the START/RESET button for the simulation in the exe file to work.

Sorry, can you clarify a bit more? no one has reported such issue so I don't what you mean

it's probably about the fact that, on startup, all the attraction/repulsion setting are at 0. Since nothing move, it look like the simulation isn't running (it does)
