404: Not found

I just uploaded to github a library I had developed quite some time ago. doc/index.html displays correctly on the working copy, but using https://htmlpreview.github.io, I get the stated error. What could be the reason, are there any fixes or workarounds?
I think because the repo was set to 'private'.
