Empty element parsed in definition

This definition:
\def\imagetop#1{\vtop{\null\hbox{#1}}}
Reports an error in the editor. (see image below). The first opening brace seems to be the problem, but I've got this definition from the accepted answer on this issue at stack overflow so I assume the syntax is correct. (but I'm not a latex expert)
