Hillshade overlay dominates map

When enabling the hillshade plugin, the shading dominates the resulting map completely, the actual map can hardly be seen. See here for example.

In former time, hillshade overlay just added a bit of shading of the otherwise unchanges map. Maybe we do not respect the alpha channel anymore, or something alike.
I also noticed this.
