Some ideas for a potential series on OpenStreetMap specially made for hikers and other outdoor active people.

  • OpenStreetMap introduction to hikers
    • What is it, who uses it and why is it good for hikers?
    • What data can be found in OSM?
    • Who adds/maintains this data?
    • How can we contribute?
    • What maps/visualizations/styles exist? (default Carto, OpenTopoMap, ...)
  • Using OSM data
    • How does the data look like?
    • How can I download the data?
    • How can I view/visualize the data?
    • How can I filter the data to only get relevant parts of it?
    • Download data for Garmin devices
  • Useful apps, websites and tools
    • Apps: OsmAnd, Organic Maps, Komoot, AllTrails
    • Websites: osm.org, OpenRouteService, OpenTopoMap, brouter, uMap, outdooractive
    • Tools: Overpass, JOSM, OpenStreetBrowser
  • Contributing to OSM
    • How does it work?
    • What are the rules/best practices?
    • How are things mapped?
      • Paths and ways
      • Natural things (forests, lakes, rivers, ...)
      • Hiking routes
      • Other stuff (benches, guideposts, maps, fords, drinking fountains, campsites, ...)
