Col.names with cases

Describe the bug
Setting coln[5]<-'$S_T^- < X$' as col.names
works well if latex, but getting S_T^- < X in html.
I tried them all but either a problem in latex or in html.
The idea is to be ble to set cases as columns, using $$
Could you put together a complete example?
I could avoid the error. The initial error came from mixing it with quarto presentation: quarto created the problem. I am aware now.
