Is it possible to get the "new mail" status ?

The mail counter works fine. But is there a way to show the "new mail" status near the icon ? E.g., to replicate the yellow/orange star that TB puts on folders with new mails (mails that arrived since the last time we opened the folder).
Having the count of unread mails is important of course, but more important for me would be to know if new mails have arrived since the last time I checked my Inbox in TB.
The star is a flagged mail icon, new is a yellow/orange dot.
I'd prefer a red dot, it'd mimic Thunderbird's tray icon
