ping(8) lacks suid/capability

FTR: Reporting this issue to make it visible to users but also track its progress.
ping fails to run as non-root user with ping: socket: Operation not permitted. That's caused by the outdated squashfs version we're using on our build system, once we use squashfs-tools >=4.3-5, this issue should not longer be present (see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=804194).
We upgraded our build infrastructure and are using squashfs-tools v1:4.4-2+deb11u2 now, ping as present in latest ISOs is working as expected again.
