Do we really need this anymore, now that ft is storing their firmware on github as well?

Probably not.

My take would rather be legal one: Do we need it for the ftcommunity-TXT-project to be independently GPL-compliant, i.e. should ft cease to have their firmware repository online? My understanding is that all the files that have to be made available under the GPL are (also) contained in the ftcommunity-TXT-repository. If this is the case, then I'd also say that this is obsolete.
Should this not be the case, I would urge to keep this, as we cannot be sure the ft files will be available in the form required under the GPL forever.

The CFW has it's own repository and all code is published there. The ft-TXT is an incomplete copy of the original 4.1.3 source code. Incomplete, because the original archive contained closed source binaries which we didn't publish here. So this here cannot even be used to rebuild anything.
