Resurrect the unit tests!

Once upon a time (before modules were introduced), the unit tests passed gloriously with at least 50% coverage. Now they are utterly broken and have become dilapidated as a result of the move to JPMS.
It's time to bring the unit tests back to where they were in the classpath days!
