The current promotion rate should match the original game. It may be simple to add a checkbox option that makes it take 2 or 3x as long to promote knights.

However, I have some ideas on optional changes to make this more interesting, such as requiring gold to promote knights that are otherwise eligible. Or. requiring that highest tier knights occupy a Citadel and 2nd-highest occupy a Tower, something like that. Will start trying this features soon once the popup/zoom changes are stable.

"approximately how many suits of full plate mail were in use in 14th century england""

"The use of full plate mail armor became more widespread in Europe during the 14th century, as armorers developed new techniques for producing this type of armor and the cost of production decreased. It is estimated that by the mid-14th century, several hundred suits of full plate mail armor were in use in England."

"approximately how many suits of chain mail were deployed in 14th century england?"

"The use of chain mail armor was still widespread in 14th century England, even as full plate mail armor became more popular. The exact number of suits of chain mail in use in England during this period is difficult to estimate, but it is likely that there were tens of thousands of suits in circulation."

This suggests the ratio of lowest-tier to highest-tier knights should be something like one hundred to one. Probably a bit too extreme for the game, but it would be fun to make the highest tier knights exceptionally rare, expensive, and powerful, even though they wouldn't actualy fight on foot one-to-one in the ways depicted.

Much of the research I've done indicates that many core concepts of Settlers1 are totally inaccurate and out of context for the period, but there's no need to fix them all. The question I always ask is "would the game be more fun with X?" and in this case, rare powerful top tier knights, I think for sure it would be more fun
