Reason for "Do not leave your home if not absolutely necessary."

Hi, what is the reason behind "Do not leave your home if not absolutely necessary."? Is this targeted mainly at very densely populated areas?

I am not a health care professional, this is only my personal reasoning.

To put it simply, if you stay home 100% of the time, your chances of getting the virus or spreading it to others, if you have it, are near zero.

Now, I don't see this as absolutely necessary in some cases. In densely populated areas? It's probably a good idea. If you live in a farm in the country side, miles away from the nearest house? Go outside and enjoy the sun.

It's not the act of leaving the house that is harmful; it's what you do outside that may be harmful, either to you or others. You have to go to great lengths to ensure you're not spreading or contracting the bug. This includes things like not getting close to anyone, not coughing or sneezing into the air, washing your hands properly after touching anything.

The problem is, it's very easy to make mistakes. Even worse, a lot of people don't understand the situation and what they need to do, or even worse, they think they do and end up doing things they shouldn't do. Golden members of the Dunning-Kruger club are going to be the end of our civilization.

Since we can't trust ourselves as a species because we are too dumb to do the right thing, an overreaching "rule" such as the one you mention may make more sense than giving people general guidelines which they will promptly ignore or contradict even if not on purpose.

@jgroenen This point (I'd guess) is mainly geared towards social distancing. A more extreme version of the CDC's and WHO's suggestions.

Per the CDC's site,

  • If COVID-19 is spreading in your community, take extra measures to put distance between yourself and other people to further reduce your risk of being exposed to this new virus.

  • Stay home as much as possible.

  • Consider ways of getting food brought to your house through family, social, or commercial networks
