Active tracers in linear problem

When solving a linear problem for some prognostic variables but not all (e.g. if we have some active tracers), what values should be used for those variables on the LHS of the linear solver? Should it be the best guess of the np1 values, or the values from the start of the time step. Or other reference profiles?
