Whenever I try to play Onward, this shows up.

It's reading d3d11.dll or whatever the mod is using to hook direct x and that dll isn't fully compatible.. at least that's often the case.
Try renaming the d3dxx.dll in the folder with the games exe to whatever you want then try to load the game and see if it works.
Windows will always default to the one in the folder instead of the one installed on the system.
If that doesn't work rename the file to kernel32.dll
