Comments from Nic:

Overall good. We can refine and improve the scope of your dissertation work as you begin to both design and continue to execute different RS projects

Next steps:

  1. Start a spreadsheet with key publications separated by issue / area (absolutely don't be comprehensive - just get this started so we can drop in key papers)

A few things I would like to see / hear before I can provide targeted advice on the reading list.

  1. Audience: Who is the primary audience for the work you are doing (e.g. you intend to do work speaking to ICSE, CSCW / CHI, Computational Social Science, Information Science more generally...all of the above?) . This is important because it helps set the stage for "This is the basis of knowledge Eva should have for doing her work"

  2. Methods / Methodology: What are the range of methods you might employ and which are most important to your future work (as an individual)? This is important because it helps the committee also understand what are the fundamental concepts we should test Eva on, and how will we know if you are prepared to do independent(ish) research using those methods.

  • For example you could have a small sentence at the end that says "While I propose to use a range of methods, my unique contribution to this work will be in building advanced machine learning models that can improve prediction tasks... To do this I depend on three emerging methods in ML - few-shot learning, ..."
  1. Impact (preliminary): More generally, who will impacted by the proposed work (RSEs, funders, policymakers, other ICSE researchers? all of the above?). Another another way to ask this question (that is more appropriate for the proposal stage is... "If you don't do this work - what is the consequence?")
