Get sensor simulation code working

In the current version attempting to enable sensor simulation by defining the SENSOR_SIMULATE preprocessor symbol results in a variety of compilation errors and other complaints. I don't know the history of that code, and it may be dependent on other configuration parameters, but it would be good to have it fully operational.
