This wasn't meant to be a review, but I went ahead and added some comments above.

"Not recommended" players contain adware, malware and the like. At best, they have basic telemetry features to collect data from your computer. Most of them go further and display ads, install other applications, or make your computer participate in a P2P network, by default. If you're planning to use one of them, be careful during the installation process and review all options to disable any unwanted behavior, if possible.

"Discontinued" players haven't been updated for a long while. Some of them are abandoned, some have successors. I'd suggest using one of the currently maintained applications instead.

My personal favorites at the moment are mpv, MPC-HC and VLC. If you don't mind configuring it through a text file, mpv is probably the best. Otherwise you can try out the others. As it turns out, there aren't too many decent media players around.

for quite a while it has been bordering me. "now playing" recognition on potplayer only works on the first file you open. so if you open files in a list and the player starts playing the next episode taiga does not track the rest of it.

I'm hoping for a Pot Player fix soon.

Side notes about other media players:
Light Alloy: Website in russian but application has an acceptable english translation
MPC-BE: Can't be downloaded.
