Question about the maintenance of centaur-tabs

erikmd opened this issue · comments

Hi @ema2159 ! thanks a lot for developing centaur-tabs!

AFAIAC, I just opened one PR and one blocking issue in the github repository, and I also know centaur-tabs is a key building block of the spacemacs distribution (even if I don't use spacemacs personally, I use spacemacs-theme).

Sorry to ask a so blunt question, but should we worry (as centaur-tabs users) that you migrated to neovim recently (as you said here)? or will you still have time to maintain the centaur-tabs repo as well?

(just to be unambiguous, I'm not asking to become co-maintainer! just meaning to say that centaur-tabs is very very nice; and if ever you'd be afraid to have less time, maybe a co-maintainer call or so could be posted in the spacemacs community, maybe? what do you think?)

Kind regards,
Erik

Hello Erik (@erikmd). Thank you for your message, and apologies for my unresponsiveness.

Indeed, I have moved on from centaur-tabs (and from Emacs), limiting myself to supporting and fixing critical issues only. Life has caught up, and my adult life and responsibilities make it difficult to dedicate as much time as I did back in the day to this project.

Some time ago I tried to look for a co-maintainer, but my search was unfruitful. I am still willing though to receive anyone that has the time and will to maintain the development of this plugin, so a call for maintenance would be very much appreciated.

I hope this helps to clarify this project's and my current situation. Again, thank you for your message and understanding.

Best regards,

Emmanuel

Dear @ema2159,
OK, thanks a lot for your message! (and sorry for not replying earlier… end-January has been quite busy on my side).
FYI, I posted the maintenance call at syl20bnr/spacemacs#16279

For completeness, here is the call text:

As an emacs and spacemacs-theme user, I strongly rely on the centaur-tabs mode, which is a building block of spacemacs.

centaur-tabs

It happens the centaur-tabs project is now looking for maintainers, and given the importance of this mode for spacemacs, we've thought this could be a possible place for posting a call for maintenance.

The question is twofold:

  1. Do you have suggestions for other places where this call could be posted? (e.g., by copying this Discussion URL over there)

  2. Would you be interested in applying for maintaining (or co-maintaining) centaur-tabs?

For 2., please respond to this GitHub issue with your motivation, and a short summary of relevant experience, for becoming a centaur-tabs maintainer. The maintainer will be selected from the issue responders by @ema2159.

Thank you for your attention.

@erikmd thanks a lot for caring and taking up the time to do this. It is very much appreciated. I am glad that after so much time, centaur-tabs is still a nice tool that improves people's workflow. Hopefully someone can pick it up and the package continues to improve.

@erikmd Do you still consider a co-maintainer? If yes, I volunteer myself as a co-maintainer. :)

Regarding myself, I serve as the primary maintainer for emacs-dashboard and one of the maintainers for lsp-mode. I have developed over a hundred Emacs packages. Hope I am qualified to help maintain this package.

Hi @jcs090218 !

Yes, the maintenance call is still open as far as I know.

I let @ema2159 answer because you know, I'm not a maintainer of centaur-tabs — just a power user that was interested to help finding maintainers :) and I'm not sure I'd have enough time to commit as a regular co-maintainer of centaur-tabs…

Anyway, thanks a lot for your reply 👍👍

@jcs090218 you seem to be very involved in the Emacs community, and also being a maintainer of emacs-dashboard and lsp-mode is the best case scenario I could have asked for the experience from a maintainer candidate. lsp-mode is a especially difficult package to maintain, so if you can handle that, you certainly can handle this.

Let's proceed then!

Thank you! I was surprised there are not many experienced maintainer candidates interested in co-maintaining this package since this package is one of my go-to recommendations. 🤔 Anyway, thank you for creating this awesome package! 😁

How would you like me to proceed this? :)

I just sent you a request to join as a collaborator. I think that is all to be done from my side but if you need anything else please just let me know! Thanks a lot for the helping hand, I truly appreciate it. Also thanks to @erikmd for acting, mediating, and making this possible.

Thank you @ema2159 !
(just FYI I had posted the call on reddit and emacs-devel; I dunno which channel was seen first but I'm very glad that @jcs090218 volunteered! :)

Indeed, centaur-tabs is a very useful mode.
