I'm trying to use dotnet format --no-restore from command line locally but it keeps failing with:

Solution has many projects but is for a WPF desktop app. Not ASP.NET Core.

If I run without --no-restore I get the following error:

The global tool works fine, the sdk bundled version is busted. I guess I missed that it was sdk bundled now and that dotnet toolx is not implicitly the same as dotnet-toolx anymore 😦

As far as I can tell there are significant differences between what dotnet format v 6.x does and dotnet-format v 7.x does with same.editorconfig this has caused issues for us with code being added that would then fail tests etc. For example, dotnet-format will add Equals method to value types that don't have one but which throw new NotImplementedException(), the 6.x did not do this...

The difference in reported code style diagnostics between 6.x and 7.x builds is caused by different versions of Roslyn Analyzers which are automatically added to your project by the version of the SDK that is being used by dotnet-format.

6.x builds can be installed with the following command and are intended to be used with a .NET 6 SDK.

dotnet tool install -g dotnet-format --version "6.*" --add-source https://pkgs.dev.azure.com/dnceng/public/_packaging/dotnet6/nuget/v3/index.json

7.x builds can be installed with the following command and are intended to be used with a .NET 7 SDK.

dotnet tool install -g dotnet-format --version "7.*" --add-source https://pkgs.dev.azure.com/dnceng/public/_packaging/dotnet7/nuget/v3/index.json

@BradBarnich Sorry, there will be a fix in the 6.0.400 version of the SDK.

This is probably what was confusing to me, the fact that dotnet-format does not use global.json to determine SDK to use but it's "own" version.
