How to turn off the 5.25 drives?

tingtron opened this issue · comments

In GS/OS, there are always two 5.25 drives on the desktop, even when no disks are inserted.
It causes (1) 12 second delay for every disk search operation (during initial desktop reveal, when disks are changed, during Installs etc.) and (2) it clutters the Desktop.

Note the time stamps below. During these times the GS/OS is stalled and spinning the mouse pointer.

I may be missing something, but I could not find anywhere in Config, F4 Config UI, command line options etc. where to turn those two 5.25 disks off. Or better only to show and access the 5.25 drives when any such 5.25 drive is inserted.

It may have to do with GS/OS (I was using 6.0.2) drivers that need to be installed or uninstalled?
However, the same situation after Easy Install of GS/OS, and after installing all other FST drivers (except MS-DOS).

Note: when two dummy 5.25 disks are inserted, the timeout is shortened to a couple of seconds. But still it would be even better, if there was a way to "disconnect" or disable the 5.25 drives altogether if they are not used.

Another workaround is in Finder menu, select Special > Preferences and then deselect Check 5.25" drives on Finder start.
