gpx files not working

Hello, maybe I just don't understand how to use it, but I'm trying to get a auto walking route going. However, every gpx file I try just loads up the points without any connections and pressing play on it just sends me to the first point and I don't move/walk to the other. When I try to make my own route, it creates the blue lines but the there are no markers saving. I might just be misunderstanding how to use it, but I haven't found a fix or work around while messing with it for a while.
