Consider alternative password manager

hancush opened this issue · comments

Bitwarden is an open source password manager and alternative to LastPass. Team plans are $1/month cheaper, and offer useful features beyond password management, such as expiring links that make sharing credentials with clients much easier (h/t @smcalilly). Their password generator is also much friendlier, as it creates passphrases rather than random strings of characters. Migration from one platform to the other is super easy (I did it in minutes for my personal passwords).

I'd like to do a quick comparison and, if Bitwarden meets our requirements, make the switch. @derekeder, @fgregg – Are there must-have features I should look for?

Cool. The only feature not mentioned that is a must-have for me is 2FA. LastPass has this, but they only support Google Authenticator. I'd like more options (like Authy, YubiKey, etc)

I've set us up on Bitwarden and invited everyone but Forest, who we can bring on board when he comes back. I also added the shared staff and partners passwords to collections in the DataMade organization, accessible by the relevant folks.

Migrating from LastPass is simple: https://bitwarden.com/help/import-from-lastpass/

The only gotcha: Make sure you import your personal passwords into your vault, not the DataMade organization. 🙃

I'm setting a deadline for this of Wednesday, Feb. 22 – our next R&D meeting.

Everyone please check yourself off here once you've migrated:

@hancush ok i'm good to go here.

Deactivated all users but me and Forest. We'll email Forest with info about transitioning.

Our LastPass sub runs out April 14. I set a reminder to turn off autorenewal. If needed, we can pay for one additional month to give Forest time to switch when he comes back.

I've transitioned to bitwarden.

Deleted everyone, myself included, from LastPass.
