Writing projects on the side

First off, I really love your idea of always doing 5 minutes a day on a side project, killer idea really.
My question involves side projects, how does one choose a project that doesn't take a month to absolutely understand before submitting a bug fix. Usually I don't feel this way, but when I have 5-30 minutes a day to freely work on something, it's tough to narrow in on anything
