[Relaunch] Install page

  • In System it would be nice to clarify that the version is based on the latest. People might get surprised if running the command brings an older version.
  • We do keep Homebrew up to date. Community isn't the right place for it.
  • Unrelated to the relaunch, but IIUC the FreeBSD instructions are asking to install LLVM 6.0 😮
  • Unrelated to the relaunch, but the OpenBSD instructions are asking to install PCRE1

BTW, I'll never grow tired of saying how nice this new page is!

Not sure what you mean by that? That the version that we show is for the most up-to-date version of the package repositories?

It is. Homebrew is a 3rd party package manager. It's neither managed by the operating system nor the Crystal project. We try to make sure to keep it updated, but we do not own the package repository. If we provided a tap for example, that would be a Crystal repository.

All installation instructions need an editorial review. I barely touched the contents while juggling everything in its new form.

Exactly: Ubuntu 23.10 has crystal 1.9, and 23.4 has crystal 1.6 😱
So doing apt install crystal won't bring you the listed version in the install page.

#718 adds a note about this

We can close this one, right?
